"The fractals are extremely beautiful this close. We have never seen anything like it before. We will never be able to share this with the others." - NYXEM[1]

NYXEM is a Nyxite, formerly a crewmember on the RHOMB. The only known living being to have passed into the fractal wall[1], they are one of the most pivotal characters to Doughbyte's story.
Activity on the RHOMB
NYXEM was a key figure in the research of the fractal wall and associated fractal corruption. Their research, in collaboration with their apprentice IOGOS[2], led to the discovery of the hyperverse beyond the fractal wall[3], confirmation of the little box theory[4], and vital information regarding the way in which the fractal wall interacts with matter.[5]
This, however, had unforeseen consequences. The repeated bombardment of the wall with RHOMB probes inadvertently caused irreversible damage to other iterations, and significantly increased the rate their iteration is being consumed by the wall[4], giving the NSIrP about 700 days to come up with a solution before the universe ends.[6]
Into the fractal wall
During a conversation with OEREC about the consequences of the RHOMB's research, NYXEM's connection to the NSIrP is suddenly severed, with additional attempts to contact IOGOS resulting in failure. The RHOMB informs them that their sector has made contact with the fractal wall and has been jettisoned. NYXEM remarks that the wall is very beautiful up close, but the RHOMB ignores this.[4]
NYXEM's sanity and physical form begin to corrupt as they progress through the wall — experiencing extreme pain, gaining extra limbs, and developing a fear of "the light" while making friends with "the dark". Perhaps most notably, they also begin referring to themselves with singular pronouns, which is highly unusual as the Nyxite are known to refer to themselves exclusively using plural pronouns.[1]
The Wanderer

NYXEM's fractal corrupted form is known to roam
265404, becoming worshipped by the Chevrin as a god known as The Wanderer. NYXEM's actions throughout the Surface have resulted in the Chevrin viewing the Llokin of the Caldera as "demons"; corrupted Chevrin who live in agony under the unrelenting light of the Focus. This devotion to The Wanderer and hatred for the Llokin eventually led to an invasion of the Caldera.
Meanwhile, NYXEM's touch is also felt inside the Caldera (outside aforementioned invasion.) There exist multiple artifacts throughout the Surface, presumed to be of Nyxite origin, that use organic matter as fuel to perform certain tasks. Notably there is a tablet — discovered by SILLH[7] — which appears to grant various abilities if given enough fuel[8], and a ball, which seems to grant the ability to be reborn after death — as demonstrated by LOTUS, ROMAL, and JAELA.[9]
Aegis of Rhodon
There is speculation that NYXEM may play an important role in the story and gameplay of the game Aegis of Rhodon, manifesting themselves as the "Welchian Fever" — a late-game injury intended to end the player's game.

Trivia
- NYXEM is the only character in all of Doughbyte to use the word "empirical" and does so three times, two of which being in the same record.
