Synopsis

After discovering a strange artifact in the Rockthorn mine, SILLH begins crude experiments on what seems to be a magical tablet that runs on organic matter. The record doesn't have any dialogue, rather it is simply a copy of her notes.

The Tablet

The artifact that SILLH finds seems to have a multitude of interesting properties, but it has one single power that immediately stands out: it consumes matter. She notes that the tablet is eager to consume anything, but it "prefers" things from certain places. For example, sand from Clearstone seems to be absorbed more readily. Living things are not exempt to the tablet's hunger, and the mere act of holding the artifact lets it eat away at SILLH's hands.

Uncovering the Artifact

The tablet seems to have simply popped into existence in an entrance of the Rockthorn mine. It should be noted that SILLH regularly goes to the mines, so she definitely would have noticed it earlier. It is unclear if the tablet is able to bend reality or simply teleport. The tablet also seems to have had a large tube of glass above it when it was discovered. It seems that the tube was meant to hold something, but it is now empty.

The Tablet's Appearance

The tablet seems to be made of multiple, hinged "pages" that connect to each other on alternating edges. The art, Stanza, shows the tablet's hinged edges. Each page is covered in symbols, and it's unclear what these symbols mean. A lot of those symbols are scratched out and replaced. It is unclear if these numerous edits are edits, or if the scratched out symbols are trying to hide properties that the tablet has. The bottom-most page is thicker than the rest and has some sort of object inside of it. SILLH makes a hypothesis that there might be something inside of the tablet, and even goes to suggest that the object may be the source of the tablet's powers.

Who built it?

It's clear that this artifact and its origins are completely alien to SILLH, as she has no clue what its purpose, its symbols, or its origin are. However, she makes some interesting guesses as to where it may have come from.

An ancient Calderan people

Whether or not these people are Llokin or otherwise, it's clear that they understood much more about the world than the current Llokin society. The magical (or technological) capabilities of such a civilization are unknown. It is also possible that one person made this tablet, and its existence was unknown to the Caldera at large. Whether or not this creator was in-tune with the Gods is unknown, but it's clear that they had some kind of edge over a normal person. The room that the tablet appeared in seemed to be some sort of shrine, with rotted banners made of some sort of thread. At least a few decade's time must have passed since the shrine's creation.

The Chevrin

SILLH makes a hypothesis that the Chevrin somehow made the device, but according to her, the handiwork is much too small for their hands. The language is also implied to be different from what the Chevrin normally use. There are numerous problems with this hypothesis, but the biggest one is location: Why did the tablet end up deep in the Caldera, instead of outside The Terminator where the Chevrin normally reside? The heat of the Caldera is also unbearable to Chevrin, so it does not make sense that one would venture out into the Caldera just to leave a precious artifact.

The Gods

Another guess that SILLH makes is that the tablet came directly from the Gods. Her first guess is that KRAZA made it, since the tablet is made of stone, and it eats different minerals at different rates. SILLH wonders why the Gods made the tablet, and for what purpose. She implies that the Gods had been doing something for free this entire time, and only now might they possibly be demanding some kind of payment, presumably from the Llokin as a whole. She also makes the mistake of assuming that the tablet's appearance is deliberate, and that its appearance was specifically for her. Her idea that she was "chosen" will carry on further into the story.

Trivia

  • The header for this record has a note from Sabre that they are "cooperating". This is a reference to the beginning prompt to a series of puzzles that lead to the discovery of this record, asking for the Director's cooperation. This isn't really touched on further, so it is most likely not that important.
  • The tablet doesn't seem to eat liquid faster than solids.
  • It is implied that this record's notes were made over an extended period of time, rather than in one sitting.
  • The object that resides in the tablet's last page is protected with a four-piece lock. SILLH was unable to figure out its combination.
  • DZUNE says something to sillh but i forgot what it was sorry
